How to Pick out a Guitar for your Child

0

Choosing a small-sized guitar is best to start your child with. Take them to a
guitar store and have them try out different sizes to make sure the fit is right. Nothing
too expensive to start with, like under $150. Also, the type of strings is very important
too otherwise they will complain about their fingers hurting when they hold down strings.
I recommend nylon strings or a hybrid nylon/steel string for beginners. Also, I’ve
observed over my years teaching, that kids need to be a bit older to succeed in guitar,
since it takes more effort to play a note than piano. I recommend starting at age 10, and
no younger than age 8. Any younger, and the ukulele is best to start with to get them
used to the basics.
